| Comments: Originally one of the 400-439 class, this
car was rebuilt at Center Street Shops in 1909 as an experimental PAYE
(pay as you enter) car. The rebuild followed accidental damage in
a fire. The new PAYE vestibules were given three-window ends, such
as current cars had (466-485 class), rather than the more unusual five-window
ends of the original group.
The PAYE remodel proved unsuccessful and was not attempted with other
cars of the 400 series. The class was not known for comfort, and
the excessive overhang created by extending the vestibules produced an
even harsher ride. This may have given No. 420 the dubious honor
of being the first of its class to be scrapped.
Retirement: 1940
Technical Notes: Rough-riding class.
Received Nelson Safety Fenders in 1912 or 1913.
Given two additional GE-58 motors in 1925, moving it from class K to
class L.
Converted to one-man operation 1927. |
